Fundamentals of Intercultural Competency

This module provides participants with an introduction to Intercultural Competency and why it is increasingly important in our personal and professional lives today.


On completion of this module, participants will be able to:

 

  • Distinguish between terminologies within intercultural competency, develop intercultural knowledge and skills and evaluate their own stereotypes.
  • Understand the effects of social, historical, economic, geographic and cultural context on individual experiences.
  • Comprehend the effects of cultural “blind spots” on their organization and/or job performance.
  • Evaluate their own biases, analyze a situation from multiple viewpoints, and select and use an alternative viewpoint using an intercultural communication model.
  • Identify the culture and values of their workplace and analyze how they influence their intercultural competency at the organizational, group and individual levels.
  • Use intercultural competency tools that they can then draw from when interacting with others in the workplace and beyond.
  • Understand the relationship between culture and communication.
  • Have a basic knowledge of some key factors that define cultural differences, including individualism/collectivism, power distance and attitudes to time.
  • Have a basic knowledge of “high context” and “low context” communication styles.
  • Be familiar with some individual and organizational strategies to support intercultural competency as well as equity, diversity and inclusion.
